The Provinces of India

All the provinces of India are featured in a long gallery where a sacred atmosphere has been recreated. Visitors are immersed in the ambiance of India’s holy sites — with divine figures awaiting pilgrim offerings in the quiet shadows.

From the Indus Valley Civilization of the 3rd millennium BCE to the last great Hindu dynasties of Western India, this section presents terracotta, stone, bronze, ivory, and wood sculptures that trace the evolution of religious art across centuries.

The Himalayan Regions

Though located within modern-day India, the collections from Bihar, Kashmir, Bengal, and Himachal Pradesh are grouped separately due to their distinct historical and cultural identities.

A remarkable set of diorite sculptures showcases the stylistic evolution during the reigns of the Pala and Sena dynasties (9th to 13th century), which preceded the Muslim invasions.

Additional bronze and stone sculptures, along with traditional textiles, highlight the tribal and rustic character of remote Himalayan foothill communities — whose iconography and artistic styles differ radically from the rest of the Indian subcontinent.
